For the sixth time, ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco's The Spirit of Brazil brings the movement and music of South America’s largest country to San Francisco, this year showcasing the traditional Brazilian arts of Capoeira and Maculelê, folk dance and musical forms linked in their origin of creation by slaves on plantations in Brazil. The performances explore the evolution of Capoeira and Maculelê, from the post-slavery era to modern-day Brazil, and trace their movement from the northeastern state of Bahia to cosmopolitan Rio de Janeiro. Under the theme “Mar de Tradições” (Sea of Traditions), the event includes performances from members of ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco’s renowned performance troupe, in addition to visiting artists, Professores Mobília, Goma and Yara and music by master percussionist Gamo da Paz and his group Quimbanda, joined by musician Alfie Macias and choreographer/dancer Raffaella Falchi and SAMBAXÉ Dance.
