  Winter Workshops
  CLOGGING with Barbary Coast Cloggers
Instructors: Matt Ellinger
Timing: Sundays, January 17- March 7 , 3:30- 5:30 pm
Contemporary clogging resurfaced as a social dance where people tapped away in square sets of four.  The first few minutes of class will focus on stepwork at the beginning level (intermediate, if no new beginners are in attendance).  The middle portion will workshop formation skills, such as traveling and partnering.  The final section of class will work on specific dances performed in formation.  All classes are very tap friendly for those interesting in learning the roots of tap dance.       The Barbary Coast Cloggers (www.barbarycoast.org) are a non-profit organization founded in 1981 and have performed all across North America at world fairs, national clogging events, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, including performances with Nancy Sinatra and right before bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs! Matt Ellinger has been performing with the company since 1991 and has been serving as Artistic Director since 1999. Matt has studied percussive dance forms since childhood and grew up to complete a Master's in Education. Ian Enriquez has been performing with the company since 2004 after completing his studies in dance, with a focus on the influence of African dance.   FLAMENCO
Instructors: Danica Sena
Timing: Saturdays, January 16 - March 6, 4:00-5:30 pm

 
This unique class is designed for novices as well as aficionados of Flamenco and Spanish dance. After a brief, multi-media historical/cultural/musical overview Master Teacher Danica Sena will introduce students to basic rhythmic structure and movement. An informal performance will immediately follow the class. Open to all ages (families encouraged) and no prior experience required.
 
Danica Sena is a choreographer/performer who is internationally recognized for her extraordinary energy and artistry. Her Mediterranean roots and an undying passion for knowledge has led her on a decade-long journey to master the art of Flamenco/Spanish Dance and Culture, and to the development of a unique methodology that has lauded her superior as an instructor of both youth and adults. Along with her complete and eclectic dance training she is a consummate singer, musician (piano, flute, violin) and actor and her original choreographies have been performed throughout the U.S., Spain, Mexico, Japan and the Czech Republic. In 1996 she founded the International Ago Arena Dance Festival in Ugata, Japan which received critical acclaim and is still active today. As a performer she has shared the stage with Ojos de Brujo, Noche Flamenca and renowned director John Mauceri at the Hollywood Bowl, Larry Vuckovich, Carmela Greco, Deepak Chopra, Compañia Rafael Aguilar, Soul Force, Rosa Montoya Bailes Flamencos, Ana Gonzalez, Daniel Doña (Baile Nacional de España,"Chanta la Mui")and La Tania. Ms. Sena brings to her students a dedication to excellence while maintaining freshness and sincere joy in the learning process. She is proud to be on faculty at ODC/Rhythm & Motion and currently teaches both Flamenco and Fusion Rhythms Dance Workout.

  HIP HOP
Instructors: Dexandro Montalvo
Timing: Saturdays, January 23- March 6: 2:00-3:30pm

Dexandro's warm up is based on working on cardio while strengthening and lengthening muscles used in the physicality of Hip Hop dance. His routines are a combination of both smooth and sharp movement and playing with the dynamic of both to create interesting and unique combinations that blend together different styles of hip hop.
Dexandro "D" Montalvo started dancing at the age of 14 and received his professional hip hop dance training in NYC. He has appeared on television shows on MTV, BET, Telemundo, and Fox. Dexandro's choreography has appeared in music videos, television, venues nationally, and has taught hip hop dance classes in various schools in New York , including SUNY Purchase College . After getting his BFA in Dance, he was offered a contract with the Liss Fain Dance Company and moved to San Francisco . Since his move to San Francisco , he has had the pleasure of teaching for National Dance Week, SFDC, Alonzo King's LINES Professional Program, and ODC's Youth Program.

  HOUSE DANCE
Instructors: Odie
Timing: Saturdays, September 19- December 5, 3:30- 5:00 pm

Building house dance choreography and exploring freestyle concepts. House Of Flo is the house dancers home, a place to cultivate and grow. The workshop pushes dancers to build on their technical foundation with fun and challenging choreography. House dance is a club dance rooted in improv and freestyle movement. Some classes will focus on house freestyle movement and musicality, allowing dancers to practice their skills and techniques for freestyling. Dancers that take this workshop are encouraged take what we learn in the studio and express it on the dance floor cyphers.
 
fLO-Ology Dance Company is composed of long-time "freestyle" dancers from around the nation, including choreographers Justin "TeN of Quad" Alladin and Sam "Odie" Kim. As artists of different dance backgrounds, they are innovators in creating impressive urban dance choreography entertainment. fLO-Ology has performed extensively in the Bay Area, including at the Hip Hop Dance Fest.

  MEXICAN FOLKLORIC
Instructors: Norberto Martinez
Timing: Sundays, January 17 - March 7, 4:30- 6:00 pm

In this introductory class, students will be transported to the colorful, energetic and expressive world of Mexican folk culture. Students will learn about the traditional dance and music from Mexico along with its varied footwork accompaniment.
Note: Character shoes or hard-soled shoes recommended.
 
Norberto Martínez is a native of Yucatán peninsula, México with over 10 years experience internationally as dance instructor, choreographer and performer. He is founder/artistic director of Folklórico Atlatonín and collaborates regularly with dance companies of all styles throughout the Bay Area.

  SAMBA
Instructors: Raffaella Falchi
Timing: Sundays, January 17 - March 7, 2:00- 3:30 pm

This is an energetic and aerobic samba class incorporating several styles of Brazilain dance: Rio (Carnaval) samba, Samba Axe' (from Bahia which includes learning fun dance routines to up tempo-songs), Samba Reggae (Afro-Brazilian influences), and Frevo (a fast paced dance originating from Pernambuco).
Intermediate level: must have taken a samba class or workshop previously. Check in with the instructor if unsure.
 
Raffaella has been a professional Brazilian dance performer since 1998. Raffaella's dance training and experience includes performing professionally with numerous Brazilian dance companies in the Bay Area and performing both locally and internationally both in Europe and Brazil . She has performed in numerous types of events including the SF Carnaval Ball and many SF Carnaval Parades. In 2004, she became co-founder of Sambamora Dance Company which offers dance classes, performances and costume design in the Bay Area. Raffaella's samba class was also awarded best of the bay in 2004. She is currently teaching samba workshops through ODC/ Rhythm and Motion and UCSF Bakar Fitness Center . She also teaches youth samba classes at Out Of Site Youth Arts Center.

  RHYTHM TAP
Instructors: Tyler Knowlin
Timing: Saturdays, January 17 - March 7, 5:30- 7:00pm

In this workshop, you will learn technique and performance skills.  The bottom line, however, is education and fun.  We will learn a little bit of the history of tap dance and the roots of this amazing art form.  This will be a style of tap that people of all ages will be able to enjoy.  If you enjoy tap dancing and performing, you are not going to want to miss this class.
Tyler Knowlin has been tap dancing since age five. Originally from Connecticut, Tyler has performed in New York City with such legends as Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Jimmy Slide, Diane Walker, Brenda Bufalino, Jason Samuels-Smith, and many more. Tyler has been in YM Magazine, for an issue on up and coming tap dancers. He attended the Academy of the Arts in Hartford, CT where he studied acting and dance. Tyler has been in numerous commercials, and a few independent films. He has always held dance above all else, looking to educate others and preserve the art form of Tap!

"Jump-start" your dance skills to the next level, either from Beginning to Intermediate, or from Intermediate to Advanced! In this workshop you'll learn all the fundamental and essential moves and techniques for mastering Beginning or Intermediate Salsa and Rueda. (Sidney and Ryan will be teaching the Beginning and Intermediate levels simultaneously.) The Beginning Workshop is the perfect way to get started dancing salsa and/or rueda, so tell your friends!

  STREET DANCE FUSION
Instructors: Nicole Klaymoon
Timing: Sundays, January 17 - March 7, 12:30-2:00 pm

This is a combination of House Dance, Waacking, and Release Technique.  The class includes a yoga flow warm-up, rhythm based footwork, choreography, and improvisational movement across the floor.  The class emphasizes the internal rhythm or "grove" that comes alive when we listen and surrender to the beat.   It is a space to cultivate ones authentic free-style and dance with feeling.  All levels are welcome.
 
Nicole Klaymoon received a B.A. in dance from UCLA. Her one-woman show, The Sixth Vowel, combines underground dance styles with spoken-word and theater. She has toured her solo show to various festivals around the world. Some of which include, Hip-Hop Theater Festival New York and DC, Miami Project Hip-Hop, Illadelph Legends of Hip-Hop Festival in Philadelphia, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Klaymoon has also danced in works directed by Rennie Harris, Marc Bamuthi-Joseph, Kamilah Forbes, and Meredith Monk.

  TAI CHI SWORD
Instructors: Liping Zhu
Timing: Sundays, January 3 - March 4, 6:00-7:30 pm

In this workshop, we will study Taoist Master Yu Anren's family tradition of Taiyi Riding the Wind Sword, which is the brother form of Master Yu's Swimming Dragon Chuan. Originated from Wudang mountain in China, this sword form is very rare and uniquely beautiful and energetic. Previous sword experience recommended. Drop- ins okay for the first 3 weeks.
Note: You will need to bring your own Taichi sword.
 
Liping Julia Zhu is a certified Qigong/Taichi instructor from China and a disciple of Taoist Master Yu Anren. She was a gold medalist in the 1996 International Martial Arts Tournament. She is the Qigong instructor at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a licensed acupuncturist, and a Zen student, currently residing at San Francisco Zen Center.   TRIBAL BELLY DANCE

(flamenco & belly dance fusion copany, co-directed by Carola Zertuche of Theatro Flamenco), and Foxglove Sweethearts. With over two decades of experience, she has trained many top dancers in the tribal fusion genre. In this highly energetic, full body workout, we explore the roots and relatives of salsa! Through isolations we gain strength, flexibility and articulate expression throughout the entire body, beginning with the core.   Off the Ground Dance

***THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL*** January 19 - May 13, $335 for 17 week session. Come experience Jo Kreiter/Flyaway's signature off-the-ground dancing on steel objects. This class focuses on both skill building and the creative process. We will work with the technical challenges and expressive possibilities invoked by flight and suspension. Workshop will conclude with an informal performance for the public. All levels welcome.

  Beginning Ballet
